However, before you can start painting, you need to take some necessary steps to prepare surfaces. It will give a better chance of having a better and stronger finish.

Each exterior painting project has different needs as preparation so you can choose which suits your case.

Cleaning the exterior wall surfaces (if necessary). If you observe some exterior mold , heavy dust and dirt on the exterior surfaces you should use a pressure washer or a garden hose with a high-pressure nozzle to remove unwanted dirt. This will help remove dirt, debris, and any peeling paint. If there is any graffiti or marks better to use a strong primer to seal them not to bleed over the finish coats later on.

Scraping and sanding the surfaces by using a scraper if there is any flaking or peeling paint. Better to sand the surface with a fine-grit sandpaper to smooth out  rough areas and create a smooth surface that is ideal for paint adhesion / bonding.

To repair damaged areas. Fixing any cracks or holes in the walls and repair them with exterior compound or caulking. Using a putty knife to apply the filler and smooth it out. Leveling with the surrounding surfaces and leaving the least sanding job possible.. Ive it enough time , the filler to dry completely before sanding.

Most surfaces need primer. Difficult to stick on surfaces requires a bonding primer. Applying a coat of primer might help the paint adhere better and last longer in many cases. Choosing a primer that is suitable for the type of surface you are painting requires experience. Asking your paint store for recommendations can be a good idea.   Primer and finish coats mostly applied with a brush or roller to achieve a smooth finish. Allowing the primer to dry completely between the coats is also very important.

Once the primer is dry, you can apply the finish paint coats. Choosing a high-quality 100% acrylic exterior paint will last longer.
